Why did I choose freelancing instead of a stable W2 9-5?
After 20 years in the IT industry working 9-5 for corporate entities, as a Sr. System Admin, Engineer & Consultant, I needed a change.
My wife is a teacher with Summers off. I have two small children who also have the summers off. This left me working at the desk all day while my family created memories without me.
One of my daughters is non verbal (non speaking) autistic and loves bike rides, and anything with motion & water. We are limited as a family with what activities we can do together due to her disability, however bicycle rides we can do as a family unit. We cherish getting out on those summer days and playing in the parks & splash pads! Freelancing allows me to take in these memories while we are all able while still completing my project work throughout the day/evening.
I form a bond/relationship with my clients and hope to work with them on and off for years to come. In the end, I do feel as if i’m sitting in the next cubical over and keep a low client base count so I can give everyone that personal touch with timely communication.
Fun Fact: You’ll rarely find me not wearing crocs. Even in winter, here in the midwest. 😉
